Find a container to collect food scraps and food-soiled paper. The city has kitchen countertop pails to use for organics collection inside the home. These are available to property managers for apartment communities. Residents can also attend the city’s kitchen pail pickup events to pick up a pail.

An online search for “compostable bags” or “clear plastic bags” will provide a variety of products to choose from. Compostable bags come in several sizes (1-gallon, 3-gallon, 13-gallon). If you prefer not to purchase compostable bags, you may use clear plastic bags. You may purchase these bags from a local or online retailer or repurpose plastic bags you already have at home. Produce bags, bread bags – even those with some color or writing on them – are acceptable. We strongly encourage residents to repurpose plastic bags when possible.

Place the kitchen pail in a convenient location for organic waste disposal, such as your kitchen counter or under your sink

Sort waste properly. Use labels that show examples of food scraps and food soiled paper. The city has labels available to print and download.

When full, tie your bag, and walk bagged food scraps to the green bin for service. Folsom apartment communities have green bins available for residents either from the City of Folsom or with a contracted hauler. The bins are located inside or near apartment community trash enclosures.

Apartments communities that utilize valet services for waste removal can contact the Recycling Team at recycle@folsom.ca.us, if staff require any training or additional information.

1. Find a container. Residents can pick up a kitchen countertop pail from the city at select local events. Or repurpose a plastic tub or container.
2. Line your indoor collection container with a bag. The bag can be made from clear plastic (repurposed bags work great here), or it can be a compostable bag, available to purchase from local or online retailers.
3. Place all food scraps and food-soiled paper in your indoor collection container of choice. This includes paper towels, napkins, coffee filters, tea bags, and uncoated paper takeout containers.
4. When full, take bagged waste out to the enclosure, and dispose of it in the green bin.

Folsom apartment communities have green bins available for residents either from the City of Folsom or with a contracted hauler. These bins are located inside or near apartment community trash enclosures. If you are not able to locate your bin for organics or mixed recycling, contact your property manager or email us at recycle@folsom.ca.us.

Properties serviced by landscapers are required to recycle yard waste either in a green bin or at an approved recycling site. Please email recycle@folsom.ca.us or call 916-461-6730 with your landscaper information. If you have a landscaper removing green waste, you are likely in compliance with the yard waste portion of your organics. If you service your own landscaping, add un-bagged yard waste into the green bin.

Generally, apartments will not be granted a waiver for any reason. Please contact us if you have any concerns about green bin placement on your property.
